Salena–A chick with a fresh and new look at women in art

I was born and raised in the capital of germany: Berlin. My mother is german and my father is from Ghana, Africa.

Being born and raised in Germany as a black female my view on certain things and the way I express myself are probably different from the majority in my country. So it’s not really my goal to be accepted bythe “official art scene” here but more by all those who can’t identify with the stuff that is mostly offered by the German art market .

Like every child I loved cartoons and I started drawing my own. I was a very observing and curious child with a blooming phantasy. I was very sensitive about visual things and sounds so I developted a special interest for those things. Paint was something like my favorite toy. All this stuck with me until today and became a form of expression.

In highschool my art teacher recognized my talent, showed how to “work” with it and taught me all the important basics about different techniques, color, composition etc. She was my first serious critc and at the age of 14 I had a hard time with getting used to it and understanding that she had good intentions with me and that it was a process of learning. In those years I had my first “jobs” and painted posters for school events or made illustrations for year books or school newspapers.

At the age of 19 I started to get more professional about it with graphic design and had my first major job, which was sketching and designing a logo for a music group. It became an important reference for me, because they went number one in the german charts last year and especially their merchandise with the logo goes very well. From that time on I have designed logos, CD Covers, press kits, posters, flyers for people of the music and entertainment industry here in germany.

I never lost my love for traditional tools like brushes, pencils and paint though. Besides music that´s what I really love and what makes me feel complete. Right now I´m trying to find the time to focus on several art projects with other artists as well as on my very first art show.
