The Intersections of Hedonism and Politics: Introducing Lee Harvey Oswald

The best music recommendations come when you are skeptical of the group that's being recommended and then the group absolutely blows you away.  My skepticism surrounding the group Lee Harvey Oswald is a case of guilt by association or even mistaken association with the group or crew Dixie Mafia, which I didn't exactly take a shine to.  The connection may or may not exist, but it was my ignorance that made me assume that the group was a part of the Lenny's Hip Hop Night crowd or that nothing could come of that scene.  My boy Andy kept hyping the group to me, finally convincing me to go to a show out of boredom more than anything else.

I was immediately struck by the amount of people in the group, which I thought numbered 13, but their MySpace page list as nine:  Among the personnel was two DJ, a person manning the MPC, two MC's, an outrageous amount of hype men, and the coup de grace, two strippers gyrating to the music.  Did I forget to mention that everyone on stage was dressed in ski mask.  The group managed to wring every bit of energy they could from the crowd, which is surprising for a group that relies on the interplay between knob twiddlers.  It was as if the group was aiming to make the show the exact opposite of a DJ Shadow show.

The crowd could barely contain themselves. The beats were a mix of classic turntablism mixed with  horrorcore eerieness.  The lyrics, when there were some, are a mixture of Cage pre-Def Jux in their painful hedonism and political catcalls that are delivered with the desperation of someone who doesn't think they're going to be heeded.  This was the type of show that has to be seen live to be believed, but don't worry children, I will give you a YouTube taste to whet your appetite.  It's kind of unfortunate that the group doesn't have any shows coming up in Atlanta or elsewhere because the live performance sold the group to me.  I would recommend anyone check the group out as soon as possible.
